75gal reef start

Starting up my 75gal that i just broke down and was going to sell, but now decided to keep just moved it.. i sold all my rock and wanted to start all over.. just one ? should i use no sand? i always had a problem with the sand getting nasy for some reason. one of my lfs has a big reef tank with no sand and looks good.. just wondering what i should do.. ive already lr rock in there to start the cycle.. any comments would be helpful

there are people that run reefs with no sand. usually when I read about these they have a high flow rate
