Hi guys....putting my tank together....
90 Gallon Reef
100lbs live rock
3.5" Sand Bed
Will be doing powerheads...either a combination of smaller ones or one large one to turn water over 10X per hour
No Sump/Fuge
Question:
I do have room under the tank but I just dont want to do a Sump/Fuge at this time. As far as filtration goes, Im still deciding what to do...
What Protein Skimmer would you recommend? I really dont want it inside my tank so a Hang on Skimmer would be best right? Im confused of whether or not they make protein skimmers like Cannister Filters. If they do, then that would be fine as well. In fact, it would probably be better because I'd prefer not to see it at all :).
Lastly, if I get a good protein skimmer, do you think I would still need a Fluval 404 Cannister Filter?
Thanks in advance. I'm reading as much as I can!

Do you want the skimmer to hang on the back of your tank or inside of your tank? Aquamedic, ETS, Tunze, CPR, and some Red Sea models are all pretty reliable. I know a lot of the models made are for HOB but some can be placed in the tank.
Your live rock and sand can handle the biological needs of your tank. I would however run the Fluval for the first few months with mechanical and chemical filtration. This will pick up the initial detritus that came on your live rock. After the system has cycled and is stable remove the filter...or I guess keep it in. Just be sure to clean the media every week to avoid high nitrate levels.

A Seaclone 150 will work fine on a 90 gallon. They are by no means the greatest but at only 80 dollars online you really can't beat it. I use one on my 125 gallon reef and really like it. Mine pulls out a full cup every week or so.
