A bad day got worse

So...... I go to work and all hell breaks loose. fellow staff members are yelling and the girls are screaming at each other, Management is freaking out because nothing got done and are more focused on what didn't get done throughout the day rather than helping out, and we were still getting these admissions and had no room for them. Single rooms were getting turned into double occupancey rooms and other patients are very upset and vocalizing their opinions and basically getting ready to go postal. Two patients code on my floor and two more on the other halls. Very long day.
I some how get through the day, damage control complete, calming down the floor nurses and lending a hand where needed. I come home looking forward to just sitting down and realaxing. Or so I thought.......
I walk into the door and get this blast of stale saltwater in my face. I notice my lights are no longer on and figure one of the kids turned them off. I go upstairs to let the boxer out of her cage, due to the fact she can not be trusted loose in the house. I then go let the Great Dane out and put them outside. Still curious about the stentch I turn on the living room lights and what do I see? Holy Crap!!
My pumps are OFF, wave makers OFF, heater OFF everything was off. Some the the rocks had fallen and after seeing my Solar Wrasse I can see how. all the fish were breathing hard, Corals were looking as if they were all waxing and drooping and looked bleached, and the temp in the tank was 72.
To top it off, there is debris floating all over the tank and slime coming off ALL the corals. I could barely see inside the tank.
Right now I am not going to stress the fish out anymore than what they already are. Leaving the lights off, picked up some of the rocks that had fallen on other corals, like my Scoley and Sun Corals. The Yellow rim Turbinara looks as if it is shedding it's skin. Purple rim Monti broke as did the Red Monti. Running some carbon and the skimmer on high.
Did a small water change and I am hoping for the best but expecting the worse. All the fish look exausted and I can't find most of them even after digging in the tank picking up some of the live rock.
So there is my day.

Damn!
Fingers crossed that everything turns out ok!
Any idea how this happened?
see above post. The thing that get me the most is this happen before and everything was fine. I think the wrasse got everyone upset and started to thrash around. There was some water on the floor and the glass.

Yeah, you answered while I was typing, lol.

Ya really. But like I stated before, when we lost power from a storm everything was fine for several hours. This time all hell broke loose.
Too fun. NOT

Hi,
The last time I had the power trip...it was the heater snapping in two. I also thought it was just a power failure. So things could have been much worse.
The rocks should not have fallen over, even in a power failure, the fish should not be able to topple the rocks. If you had cats I would sware kitty had fallen in the tank jumping up there. If it has happened before then (please forgive my preachy speach) you need to fix the rock better. The falling rock could have broken the tank besides crush critters.

too true flower, I was stumped. My rock work was, or as I thought, well put together. I do have a huge snail in there that could have done this as well. I don't know if the tank got body slammed y someone or what, but no one was home all day.

I feel your pain and offer my condolences. Last year my family rearranged the living room and forgot to plug my 125g reef tank filters back in. I discovered it the next morning, but it caused a chain reaction crash. First the critters all crawled out of the DSB and then they all died and then the corral(mostly aptasia by then so NBD) died and then the fish started dying and by day 3 I had 125 gallons of foul smelling soup. Lost my 12" hippo and everything else. Then last week the power went off for about 20 minutes, but the filter on my 29g didn't come back on. The wife noticed the next morning. The tank completely recycled, but the neon blue damsel and yellow goby both survived with several water changes. I really hope the best for you. But FWIW, start testing for ammonia. My 29g went from 0-8.0 in 1 day. I used Amquel and water changes and nursed the tank through and saved, at least, the 2 fish and three hermits.

Thanks for the thoughts. Just tested the water and everything thing except the trates are good. The fish seem fine and hungry. The wrasse looks a little stressed still and my blue sponge is still a tannish pissy color. My tank was off like yours mentioned, for atleast 24 hours one time last summer. I did not plug the filter in and left. The next day I noticed it was rather quiet in the livingroom and only then did I notice what had happen. Everything did great as if nothing was wrong at all. The monti's looks like their still pissed of and the Scoley seems to have gotten over it. There was a huge rock on top of it.
Goint to hit the tank this weekend and rearrange the rock, pull out some corlal in the QT, and get the tank back to it's glory.

Hope things are looking better today!
Thank you and the other than the rock work looking like it was just thrown together the tank has cleared up. The corals look much happier but the wrasse as of last night still looks a little stressed. I'm watching him today and he seems calmer. The elegance however loved the mess. It looked pissy when I was cleaning it up and had to mover it. The Scoley doesn't appear to have any damage at all anf the blue sponge is blue again.. So I am grateful.

I have a question for you. How small does the elegance get after the lights go out?

Hey Keifers!
Sorry to hear about your troubles. I've been a little MIA lately, trying to wrap up the school year, prepare for next year, and oh yeah...buy a house. I can safely say that my stress level was probably never even near as high as yours was that day. Hang in there, you're a pro and everything will come out alright in the end
