A filter question

My tank has been up and running for almost four years now. During that time, I've cleaned my filters and the sponges in them plenty of times. I was just thinking....should I replace my sponges, seeing as to how they are four years old? Or do I just keep cleaning them until they disentegrate? Any help would be much appreciated.

I would just keep cleaning them until they are worn out and falling apart . But it wouldn`t help to have an extra set for a spare .

if its not broken why fix it? I chang mine every other month
