A little help here.... :)

I just converted my fresh water 33g into a fosw tank. I presently have a fluval 304 canister filter, w/ 2 aqua clear powerheads. Eventually, I am going to upgrade to bigger and better tank, equipment, etc., when I learn more about the hobby, ofcourse. If someone could take the time to explain what certain filter devices are (ie: a sump, protein skimmer, etc.)and what they do exactly, and what you would recommend to have, I would greatly appreciate it. Do you think that my current set up is enough for right now? I do not plan on doing a reef or overstocking this tank. Some good name brand systems would be helpful. Also, what kind of media would you recommend to have in a cannister filter for swf? All help appreciated, ty.

a protein skimmer is a great tool, it basically is a type of filter, that skims the garbage(nutrients) from the water, adn for a 33 a prizm should do well,
as for the media, i don't htink i'd have any, the skimmer and powerheads, along with lr and a dsb should be plenty for your system, especially if you intend to stock carefullly
as for the sump, it is an add on(basically) for your tank(almost any container can be used, even an unused bucket), giving you more water and a place to put your skimmer and you could add sand and rock and algae to it if you like, giving you more filtration and nutrient export, plus you can put your heater in it, making it not visible to the viewing area
if you do use the fluval, personally i would use it empty, for additional circulation, only
i do think that your current set up would be fine, however, i think hte larger aquariums are easier to take care of, the easiest are larger rect.s (55 to 125 are best of these)
for substrate, i definitely like the dsb over cc
