A mix of a sand bed and crushed coral for a Dogface Puffer?

I heard from someone that I should put some crushed coral over my sandbed for the dogface puffer because it is beneficial for his teeth. Yet, elsewhere, I heard that I should not use crushed coral because I would develop a nitrate problem, etc. Which of these statements are true? Or are they both true?

The crushed coral would depend on how fine of coral you are planning on getting. Most poeple on here like the sand bed, I on the other hand do not.

Yes, very fine crushed coral, then all this dicussion about the coral holding stuff in it is mute, because its just like the sand. I just like it because of its natural buffering effect.

I dont have a puffer anylonger BUT I can tell you it is suggested to care for their teeth that continue to grow throughout their lives. In the wild they would eat hard corals, inverts and coraline algea to maintain the teeth size so that they can close their mouth -- if left alone with nothing to file their teeth it is thought that it could cause the teeth to grow to the point that they cant close their mouths
For regular feeding, feed the puffer hard-shelled invertebrates, such as frozen foods like whole cockles in the shell, and a variety of mollusks from the seafood counter. These foods will help keep the puffer's teeth short, while providing the necessary nutrition. It is best to offer these foods to the puffers at least twice daily.
personally before I moved and got rid of mine - I like the look of sand and just fed them correctly
