A nano is born!

Just set up a 2.5 desktop nano next to my computer. I just put the rock and sand in so the water is still foggy. I started building the canopy/stand yesterday and just finished up today. I plan on putting 2 harlequin shrimp in there along with some zoos/mushrooms for color. Cant wait for it to finish cycling!! :D

How are you going to sustain the shrimps diet of fresh starfish without spiking the water quality when the starfish starts to decay?

Audisteve, I was planning on feeding them a CC starfish like one every 2 weeks, but the issue of ammonia spikes I didnt think about. That is a very good question, and thanks for bringing that up, because now I will look into it more. I figured that 2 shrimp would be able to finish the starfish off fast enough to not cause much of a spike, but I will definately look into that before I put anything live in there.
The rocks I got from a LFS, real small place, but has the best selection of LR I have ever seen. Looking in his LR tub is just a fun as looking into my diplay tank lol. Just on the top I notices a rock with loads of zoos, GSPs, mushrooms, and many other corals all over the rocks. Not a bad deal for $5/lb.
I also agree that the stand is too small, but I was going for the big canpoy/stand look. I am going to redo the stand so that it matches the canopy in both size and shape.

I just started a 2.5 gal too. I'm really concerned about maintaining water quality. I don't think the harlequins will work either, but you'll come up with something good. :) Hubby is going to make a canopy for mine this weekend. I was thinking about going without a stand though. Post yours when you get finished. It might inspire me to get him to make me one too.;) Your rock looks awesome.

Heres an updated picture of the completed stand/canopy. I think this looks alot better. Im pretty satisfied on how this turned out. I think I am just gonna go with a single CBS in there with some corals.
Let me know what you think:

what kind of filter are you running on that? Nice build with the stand and hood. Looks great. I agree, looks a lot better after redoing the stand.

I bought a Red Sea nano filter from a LFS. Ive never seen one, but I went the other day and it is a mini filter designed for tanks up to 3 gallons. Seems to be working pretty good on keeping the water clear and circulated :)

thanks, what type of equipment do you think i iwould need if i am planning on doing corals, and zoos. I just want to do a small tank for now and i will move to a bigger tank eventually. I plan on having two nanos. The coral one will be a 2.5 and the FOWLR will be either an eclipse 12 or 20 gallon tank, can't decide betweent those two. So just to clear up all of this, what i am really asking is what all would i need for the 2.5 for zoos and corals. Would i still want to put LR in there with everthing?

As far as equipment, everything was fairly inexpensive. Theres the tank ($11), two 15w PC bayco worklights ($40 at HD), regular white aquarium sand from ***** ($5), filter from LFS ($15), wood for canopy/stand ($25ish), actinic 15w PC bulb ($6), live rock ($35)
I would definately do LR for the extra filtration. I would have liked to do LS also, but I couldnt find anywhere that sells it in such small amounts. So I spent about $140 for everything, and this is my first, so Im pretty sure that is all I will need, debating on whether or not I need a microjet powerhead in there though.

I could see how you would need a powerhead, but i am not sure because of the size of the tank. water movement might be taken care of by the filter. Thanks for the input. This is the kind of set up i am looking for to start wiht. I am in college and on a limited budget. This will help out a lot. thank you.
Where did you get your tank from if you can't post it on here my email is: seschaefer@bsu.edu
thanks again
