A note on MM

Was snoopin around my lfs today and found a canister of MM- its shipped dry - and was 35 bucks for 5lbs. It had particles almost the size of CC down to fine silt. I know I'm very new here but I don't see anything special about it. The claim on the container just states that it helps to reduce ammonia / trates / and trites. It had 3 aged pics of a butterfly fish at 1 week 1 month and 4 months. corse 1 week it was in BAD health and after 4 months it was fine (assuming was same fish lol). Now wouldn't a reg DSB do the same in a established and close watched quarrentine tank? Or a hospital tank??

there are no PROPER quick fixes here, there are some products that may reduce ammonia and trites, but they cannot expend trates(i believe), but hey do not solve the problem either, so what good does it do??, the problem needs to be fixed, and then they will come down naturally and be more stable,
and as for the pics, naturally a fish(esp. a butterfly) will be less healthy when subjected to ammonia, then a bit better in trites and then a bit better in trates or nothing at all, but 4 months, a dsb(if all problems are rectified)should have the same results and in less than 4 months where as the fish would look bettera s it goes away and then the fish gets healthier
and yes you are right a good dsb will do the same thing and stay stable(not shoot back up after the treatment stops, which may happen if the problem is not resolved)
another thing, what was this made of?? chemicals?? if so that is enough to scare me off, no chems going in my main tank(maybe meds in the QT), except things to stabilize my h2o(like ph and calcium if they can be considered chems)
so i concur it does sound like a scam here too

The pics that you saw probably had to do with lateral line disease. MM is proven to cure and prevent lateral line disease. It had nothing to do woth the nitrate levels (I didn't see the pictures, but that is what I'm guessing)
