My method of cleaning my tank will seem a bit odd to most of you, but I have an unusual setup. I have a barebottom tank, I have a filter pad in the overflow, and I only have very large pieces of liverock. First, I take a toothbrush and scrub my liverock. This will get rid of diatoms, algae, and other things I don't want on my rock as well as stir up the detritus and uneaten food particles. While I wait for that to settle I use coarse sponge to clean the glass and a razor blade to clean the back wall and overflow box. Then I will siphon half of the bottom. I will move my rocks forward to the front of the tank and siphon the other half of the bottom. My tank stays very clean. LOL! After I move my rock back I will use the toothbrush to remove algae buildup from the serrated fins of my overflow box. I will add more water, and then the last thing I will do is change my filter pad in the overflow box. This way all my cleaning did not just stir up debris or leave it settled in a different place. It actually collected on my filter pad, which was the last thing removed.
