A quicky: filter cartridge?

I need to know when I should change my filter cartridge. The one I have has been in there for like two months now, and it's really dirty. However, I know that there are many beneficial bacterias in it. Imagine, one time my cleaner shrimp's old scale got sucked into it. I don't want to remove it, but if not my filter will not function properly. What do I do? I tried to clean it, but those brown stuff doesn't seem to change a bit. It's still there and it's still dirty. Help? Get a new one? If I need to get a new one, how often should I do that?
Thanks,

If it gets dirty enough to slow the flow of water through it,then it is time to clean/change.To clean it you MUST use SALTWATER.This will keep you from killing the benaficial bacteria. But if cleaning will not work, then replacement is needed. The problem with replacement is the loss of this bacteria...You could roll up the old filter and put the it into the tank till the new filter has a chanse to build up the bacteria needed. But this is only needed if you don't have alot of rock and sand. The rock and sand should hold enough bacteria to sustain the bioload through this filter change....HOW MUCH ROCK DO YOU HAVE????
