A suggestion about leaving the hobby when you have a baby.

Ibanez, I hate to say it, but from the last couple responses you've made, it sounds as if your saltwater tanks are an addiction for you. Your last post even rationalizes the reason for keeping one based on the low cost of electricity it takes to run it. You want four, five, six tanks? Knock yourself out. You want to spend every penny of your discretionary income on this hobby? Good for you. But don't chastize people for not having the same passion for the hobby. Like I said in my previous post, it is what it is - a hobby. My tank is not my life. It's become more of a 'living piece of art' that sits on a credenza in my living room. A conversational piece when guests come over. However, if I were to shut it down tomorrow, my life wouldn't come to an end.

Isn't this a place where addicts gather to support eachother and feed the addiction?

And tempt each other with all the cool goodies we "could" get if we are willing to sell our souls and promise our firstborn?

Chastise means to punish, especially by beating, to scold or condemn sharply. I don't think I did that to anyone. As the title states, it is merely a suggestion. I have a 29 gallon planted freshwater, 5 gallon saltwater, 10 gallon saltwater, and hopefully a 90 gallon saltwater tomorrow, I don't really think that is too over the top, but judge it if you will. As far as the electric consumption, It was way lower than I thought it would be, so I thought I would share that information being that it is factual information. I also fish, hunt, ride motorcycle, camp, mechanic, exercise, and play guitar..... every bit of my money doesn't go on this hobby, but it wouldn't be the first thing to go if something happened to drain my savings because the enjoyment I get from it far out ways the 20 dollars a month it costs me. I could find better ways to come up with the money.

A 5 and 10 gallon saltwatr tank? What do you have in them? I can see how maintaining tanks that small isn't draining your pocketbook. I'll think you'll be a little more shocked once you get the 90 gallon started. After you put a 48" metal halide or T5 light that can support certain corals, two or three powerheads, a filtration system, a sump, and a protein skimmer into that puppy, let us know your current draw/electric bill. Also, be prepared to spend 5 times as much on salt, plus needing access to approximately 10 - 15 gallons of RO/DI water every 2 - 4 weeks, depending on the bio load you put in that tank. Think that $20/month will get be doubled or tripled.

I am in a differant boat here. I am Disabled as many of you know. The ONLY HELP I GET is my SSDI for myself with Dependant Benefits. Out of that I make pay all my HOUSEHOLD expenses. I get just over 2100 a month and am able to support my 150 4 and nano. What I do is budget for any major purchases. Yes things get tight at times BUT all my bills are paid and we love our tanks. What sucks is my son wants a ray and that means not one but 2 300 gallon tanks in this house. I hate my life sometimes.
However if I get the Surgery I want or get under control Med wise I will be able to go back to work that would help out BIG TIME. That and my wife getting her LPN next year.

The post to end this thread:

If you are counting pennies and have to decide between food for you, or food for your tank / salt, then you should not have a salt water tank. You need to save some money and get your finances in order.
End of story.

On that note, that is a poor investment, because you will never get out of it what you put into it. I consider my savings account money on reserve, if anything should happen where I need money quick, I would dip into my savings. Here is an idea, for another thread, if you cant put 20 bucks or so a week into savings, you won't be able to take care of a tank. Dumb me just assuming people in this hobby would be smart enough to save for a rainy day before they play. I don't consider my tanks emergency reserves. They are recreation. Instead of going to the movies, or out to eat, or starbucks, or brand new cars, I choose to have tanks. I just don't get the mentality that says, it's taking care of my family or tanks. It doesn't always have to be between the two. I AM NOT SAYING IT DOESN'T COME DOWN TO THAT AT TIMES. Ooops, kid had to go to the doctor, better sell a fish.

Why is that. What a hateful Ahole remark.

Just let it go...it was an evil thing to say.
I know where your heart is friend, a saltwater tank is so educational, and my grandchildren visit my fish tank with the same joy they show when they to go to the zoo. All the ooos and ahhs.
I let them name the fish and explained what each one does in the fish community; they call my lawnmower blenny the zippy fish. Even my elderly mother enjoys watching the tank. Her favorite is the sand sifter goby, I bought it just for her, so she can watch the sand fall from his gills.
My sister is fascinated by the coral, she freaked out to see they had a mouth that opened to eat, and called her 16 yr old daughter over to watch..
Add all that to the sheer joy it gives me....may I always be blessed have a saltwater fish tank.
For those who feel they must give it up, but deep down inside love it…if there is any way, any at all…keep it.
