They are about the same as all otehr tangs. Can be aggresive to other tangs, and are subseptible to ICH.
Nothing but good here. Just give them a good diet and good water quality.

Mine isn't mean at all. Although they are prone to lateral line. Mine was free as it has lateral line and the previous owner that it made him ugly. It's pretty severe on one side but hasn't affected him at all and he's had it for at least a year.

I have heard that Vitamin C supplements help with that disease. A good diet of Nori is also helpfull.

Ditto...Purple Tangs are candidates for lateral line disease. Many suspected causes of the disease including stray voltage in your tank. I strongly suggest you ground your tank with a grounding probe. Just my .02.

grounding probe was in the tank it came from. I think it's nutritional. The guy was only feeding brine shrimp and VHP. We are now feeding Formula Two, seaweed strips and soaking food in Zoe and Zoecon. Kent Marine's info says Zoecon helps reverse it. We're trying. Also heard broccoli reverses it. Might try.

My understanding is that a diet rich in vitamin C can help cure lateral line disease, along with increased lighting time or exposing the tank/fish to direct sunlight. I have no idea if it works, but this method is suggested for curing lateral line disease in some articles....best of luck. Perhaps you should ask over on the disease board.

Thanks! I'll have to look at the Zoe and Zoecon and see if it has Vitamin C. If not, I'll try it. He's an extremely hardy little guy.

I will try and post pics of the little guy at the LFS that was cured with Vitamin C. He did noot even have all of his fins. But, it also could have been something else that cured him also... Who knows. Eitheir way, he is beautifull now.

I hear lack of vegetable diet is one cause of lateral line. Especially when combined with poor water quality. I feed my tangs algae sheets to suplement the loss of vegetables. I rehabed a huge sohal tang with lateral line by using algae sheets.
Then my three foot tessy eel ate him right in front of my face. All cause he was in his cave. Poor tang. He was gorgeous.

My understanding is that 'experts" are not really sure what causes lateral line disease.....some suggested/suspected causes are stray voltage in the tank, poor diet and stress.
I too suspect I have an eel that has been eating my livestcok. He is only about 10 inches long but I believe he ate a 4-5 inch green bird wrasse under dakness of night , yet he has lived for over a year with a zebra damsel...I inherrited the eel and damsel with the tank.
