we're converting to a 125-gallon tank. i was planning on converting our 55-gallon into a quarantine and buying another tank for a sump. My husband wants to make the 55 a sump & get an even smaller tank for the quarantine. what size tank is sufficient for a quarantine? how much of an effect will it have on larger fish if they're temporarily held in a small tank? thanks!

A 30 is a sufficient QT provided you only QT one or two at a time. :)

Hey Tizz - Does that hold true for Tangs as well? I was told that a 30g was too small and would stress the fish too much.

A 30 gallon is to small to "house" a tang, but for quaranteen, with proper water flow and of course a hiding spot they should be OK for the 2 week duration. If it turns out that they need to be treated then your QT becomes a hospital tank and the fish is usually in a hospital tank for 6 weeks. If the fish is a yellow tang or smaller that should be OK, but if the fish is an 8 inch naso then you'd need a bigger tank.:)
