?? about quaratine tank

Hi,
I've been slowly setting up my 20 gallon quaratine tank. The reason why I say "slowly" is b/c I'm using the water from my main tank when doing water changes to fill the q/t.
I wanted to know if I could use sponge filters for the q/t tank. If so, do I just place the filter into the main tank for a couple of days?
I already have a heater, NO lights, thermoter, pvc pipes, and ph.
I think that everything I need, if not please let me know.
My tank has been up and running since June and I only have my clean up crew.
My daughter keeps asking where the fishes are so I think it's time to get my 2 clown fish.
Thanks
Michelle

i would just use a hang on back filter. You can get a really inexpensive H.O.B. power filter at the lfs for a 20 gallon.

I just set my q tank up 2 weeks ago. I aged the filter media in my main sump for 2-3 weeks in advance then used 100% water from my main tank and about 2 cups of sand from my main system. I then "tested" the q tank for a week with 2 damsels, there was no ammonia spike so I traded them in for my 2 clowns. That was a week ago and so far so good, no signs of a cycle! I also used a HOB filter from lfs.
