In an established tank.....Bad...it gets worse the deeper the bed is to even think of stiring it yourself.
However it kinda does need to be stirred and thats a job for the infauna and other critters walking on top and in the sandbed itself.

ok, well I have a artificial decoration in the center of my tank that I plan on taking out and replacing with more LR but when I take it out there is going to be a bare bottom under it. How should I get my sand in that area b/c I had planed on just smothing it out. Will that be to much stiring? Would it be easier to just add more sand to that area?
