Is ABS pipe, the same as PVC pipe? Also, when I go to the hardware store...do they sell bulkheads for using in a sump? If so, what exactly would I ask for?

Don't know if I can be much help... but to answer your question.
No
ABS is Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene
PVC is Polyvinyl chloride
The above I know to be the case... the rest am just winging...lol
Both are used in plumbing...typically pvc for water supply and ABS for venting and sewage. Which now makes me wonder if there is a reason for than (more research needed)
I do know that ABS is used in irrigation systems, like for your yard.
Also I think there are cements that are product specific, may want to ask the hardware guy. As far as bulkhead fittings... guess it depends on the hardware store. If they are BIG on plumbing you prolly will find them. A Home Depot near me carries various bulkhead fittings as well as larger LFS's. These plumbing parts are readily available on line as well, usually MUCH cheaper too.

glueing abs to pvc propably wont work as stated different glues. you could get a male fitting of 1 and glue and female of the other and glue it then just screw them together if you really want to switch from one to the other.

I was going to get ABS pipe because they didn't have as many parts for PVC pipes, but I need 1" pipe, the smallest you can get ABS is 1 1/4" which is too big for my project. I couldn't find bulkheads anywhere, so I just bought a single threaded poly adaptor which im going to tread into the hole in my sump and then seal it with a crap load of silicone :)

Just as well, from what I was able to find, ABS is not intended for contact with food or water we consume. In the past it was used for waste lines, but in recent years it has become prohibitted (in many areas) in new construction. I am a safety person by profession, and ABS doesn't sound too good. It contains acrylonitrile which is a highly carcinogenic, teratogenic chemical. It maybe completely bound up in the polymer, but I certainly wouldn't put it in an aquarium.

Did you know that you can glue clear vinyl tubing (such as air hose tubing) pvc piping using pvc. so if you need to make your own manifold you can take a 2 inch piece of pvc and glue two caps on it. Then drill holes in it, rub pvc glue on the out side of the rubber tubing and the inside of the hole and it will have a super strong bond. Strong enough to withstand 60 psi. Just so you know. I do makeup fx for movies and when we do blood gags using tubing that what we do to make our own tubing manifolds. It holds up over time, try it out.

Re reading my post I noticed I left out words. What I mean is you can glue clear vinyl tubing to pvc piping using pvc cement.
