acan not filling

my new watermelon acan head is not yet plumping up to what i would call normal. Its small the size of a dime. but at night little tentacles are coming out of the move. not big at all though.
i have them right above the sand bed, under 2x250 watt MH

for some reason i had this same problem when i first got mine. they actually seemed to be doing better sitting half under a rock ledge to shade them from the light a little. i dunno if thats normal, but it worked for me. they plumped up so i just left them there.

I agree. I had an acan frag high up in my tank (under a PC) it never expanded much until I placed it lower on the reef (just above the sand) and immediately began to act better.
I see many acans in LFS under Halides; they all seem to be somewhat shriveled, my opinion, too much light.
