Acceptable nitrate levels?

I know ammonia should be 0ppm and nitrite should be 0ppm but what is the acceptable maximum level for nitrates when keeping corals in the tank?
I've seen ranges from 0 - 40ppm. What is correct?

Zero is prefered. Some corals and inverts can not tollerate nitrates. But a fish only tank can run up to around 60ppm before you start seeing trouble.

I agree with Mr. Salty. Zero is what you should be shooting for. With all the different types of filtration available, DSB and Plenum systems with lots of LR are best for lowering nitrate levels to zero. Along with proper maintainence(water changes and cleaning, and of course, not over-feeding) will also help to maintain the nitrate levels. HTH--Bob
