YES,MH would be perfect. You should try to get them at least 8-12 inches away from the acrylic though. Not really sure here, but it sounds safe. Those bulbs produce alot of heat, and could melt the top of the tank.

Thanks Mr. Salty, Sometimes I could smack these lfs, they take such advantage of newbies, this doctor contacted these people to setup and maintain this tank, 180gal, it has been up for only 2 1/2weeks, we stoped at this lfs on the way home from the hospital and the owner seen our address on my check and started bragging about putting this tank up, he said we should stop in and look at it, fixit stoped by yesterday and OMG, they have 3 yellow tangs and several clownfish in it, all have finrot and ick, fixit about flipped, he had the doctor and everyone out there in the waiting room, telling them this was not going to work, the doctor doesn't know anything about this hobby, nothing! The lfs didn't even have them feeding anything but brineshrimp...Fixit sat for about an hour telling him what he need to do, get rid of the fish, let the tank cycle,etc...They won't be able to get rid of the fish til next week so fixit went over there today with some Formula One and algea sheets for the tangs. This guy has about $8000 tide up into this, he has asked fixit to take over the care of it for him. We plan on opening a petshop with a service for people that want saltwater but might need a little help, so this is a way to start I guess. It gave fixitsomething to look forward to and put a little bounce back into his step. I think this was sent from heaven...The doctor wants anemones, but he only has 250watts on this huge tank, that is why I asked about MHs with acrlic..Thanks for the info...Later Lisa

What a disaster - so much money this doctor has invested and for what ?
Glad to hear you guys getting involved helping this man out and trying to save these fish.
Thumbs up to you and fixit !

If you are using a canopy make sure it is 14" tall from top of tank to inside top of canopy. This will be fine. That is a normal height to start with. If you are still worried, keep the MH's over the openings of the tank. If you willl use pendants they are usually set at 16 - 18 inches off water. Good luck with and when you open your store.

Thanks guys! It makes me sick the way some of these lfs take advantage of people. It happened to us when we first started out, the difference is that we wanted to do it all our selfs and this doctor wanted the beauty of the tank and the fish without the hassel of the up keep. We are waiting to see what is going to happen with fixit in the next couple of months, he sees the nero-surgin at the end of Aug. he may be having surgey on his back, 9 herniated disks, not sure if they will fuse all or run a bar up his back. The pet store has always been a dream of mine, now we want to specialize in saltwater fish, there is only one store in town that sells them and they only have 2 small tanks, and I would not buy anything from them, I wouldn't even take anything if they gave it to me, there fish always look aweful, they don't know the first thing about cycling there tanks, I tried to explain it to the girl when I stoped the last time and she didn't follow me at all.
Can't wait to open a store...Later Lisa

Thank You Mr. Salty, No wonder I Love this BB, everyone is so great. Probaly won't happen for a year or two, like I said we have to wait and see what happens with fixit with his back. The doctors are saying he most likely will not be able to drive semi again, that will be very hard for him, he loves to drive but he loves the saltwater hobby and animals as much as I do so it would be very rewarding for both of us.
Believe me our Family here will be the first to know when it happens! And everyone of you will be invited to the GRAND OPENING!! Later Lisa
