I always have run activated carbon but recently had a problem w/hair algae and one of the customers at my lfs(who seemed to know his stuff) recommended a phosphate sponge and then asked me why I ran my filter with carbon..he said the carbon removes all of the additives that you may add to your reef.It did make sense to me so I am going to replace the carbon w/something called "renuzit" or something like that he reccomended...If anyone knows whether or not this statement is correct or not please let us know.

well, its my opinion that the carbon removes some particles and it clears up the water, like polishes it.
the way i use it is one, rinse it thouroughly, then put wherever u use it, i put it in my sump. i leave it sit for about 3-4 days. then i take it out, wash it out good, then let it dry out. I do not put it back in the tank. about 3-4 weeks later, i use the same carbon again, i place it in the tank for 3-4 days, then repeat the cycle. i ususally get about 2-4 uses out of each baggie i make up.
i dont leave it in the tank constantly because after all the carbon fills up with the bad stuff, then the bad stuff breeds in your cabon bag and starts to produce. atleast thats my opinion.
so for what thats worth, thats how i use it.

I was told by an aquarium product rep at my LFS that you should only run carbon like 3 days out of a month. He said it will kill off any trace elements. So run without it and then put it in and run for 3 days then back out. But I have run mine 24/7 without any noticed problems. All of my params are excellent and everything looks healthy.
