Activated carbon

Just wondering of all the pros and cons of using activated carbon. I have heard that it is a bad thing once it has been exhausted. Should I just stick to using a wet/dry and skimmer?

When I started 12 years ago I used carbon. It seemed everyone suggested it. When I went to a reef set-up I switched to wet/dry and never had a problem. I sold all my corals and have an aggressive set-up and just wondered if there was still alot of hype about it. I never believed in using it in a reef because of the possible release of phosphates and toxins after the carbon reached its carring capacity. But wondered if it is worth using in a fish-only tank. Should I stick to the wet/dry and protein skimmer that has brought me such good luck?
