I have tried to add plant life to my tank on two occassions in order to bring nitrates down. The problem is that my fish and/or overflow keep getting it. I considered putting it down in my sump, but wont that get caught up in my skimmer, etc?
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Stock,
I have a friend who actually had your exact problem. He came up with two possibilities, and both worked, but the first was kinda annoying in that it was an extra fixture on his tank.
First thing he did was add a 2nd sump that he designed that allowed for slower water flow and he didnt use it for ANYTHING but plants and live rock in it. It was a 2nd sump attached.
But he got tired of an extra sump.
So he then took his main sump and reveresed the flow (sounds odd, but thats what he did) and actually bought miracle mud and put the plants in there. He also kept a small pc light over it all the time and his plants went NUTS. It was cool. But the plants were so overwhelming sometimes they would clog the sump because they grew so much, but im positive that was just because he kept the light on them.
hope this helps a bit.
btw: there is a reef solutions sump you can buy that acutally uses plants as part of its process. But its only for up to a 60 gallon, and it is quite expensive... $300 I believe.

Hey alianated2k2 !
Welcome back - where ya been man ?
I read what you said above and I am very curious how your friend reversed the flow in his sump ???????
He reversed the flow of water that normally ran through various chambers of his sump, or what ???
Confused as can be on this one
