adding dead sand to a BB tank

what is the process of doing this? I don't really like the look of a BB and I think the spotted is more used to sand... The LFS sells a 20# bag of dead aragonite sand, do I just wash it in a 5gal bucket and then dump in? I know I won't cycle because there is no bacteria in the sand, right?

yeah but it will cloud up like crazy when adding to a tank thats up and running wash the heck outta it and then soak in in new saltwater to get it wet. put it in 1gal zip locks turn off all pumps powerheads sink it to bottom then open and push it out very slow. wash first time in ro or dechlor h2o.

I was gonna put a 1" pvc to the bottom of the tank and put the sand down the tube, can't that work too? I really wouldn't feel like doing all the bags, it would take way too long but thank you for that suggestion, can I do this all at once or do I need to do it a little at a time?

its gonna get cloudy no matter what you do ,so just use the pipe to get it to bottom of tank and to stop it from floating freely on top of everything else.

alright thanks, and should I add it all at once or what? I also want to add some to my fuge because right now that is BB too. I dont want a DSB in the display just enough to have a thin layer around the rocks and stuff, should I do 15#'s in the DT and then do 5#'s in the fuge? what's good for the denitrification in a fuge? thanks for the responses.

You might as well, when i changed out my CC to LS i did it all in one night with a few fish and a green serpent star and everyone came through just fine.
Cheatomorpha or Calupera works just fine, you could also look into mangroves if you have the room.BTW if your not going to put a DSB in your refugium I wouldnt put any in there at all.

I am doing a DSB in the fuge not in the DT, thats why i asked how many inches i need in the fuge for denitrification.. 4 inches be ok? I would like some mangroves even though they grow slowly it will be somethin different from the chaeto but i need sand first.
