How do you know how many fish is enough for a reef tank? Is there a rule of thumb? So many per gallon? I have a 46 gallon reef, any suggestions? I have LR, PC's, coral, clean up crew, skimmer, fluval 305, 3 aquaclear 20 power heads.

most will say 1 inch of fish per gallon... i say it depends on the fish you want... but a good rule of thumb IMO is a few as possbile so you dont stress your bio load, and have enough room for the fish to swim...

I say 1 inch of ADULT fish per 2 gallons . However almost all will say 1 inch per 5g. It really depends on the fish.

An old and very broad formula for SW fish is 1 inch per 5 gallons. In reality it does depend on fish. a 5 inch Engineer Goby and a 5 inch Puffer or Tang will not produce the same amount of waste or need the same amount of food.
