adding live sand

I need help with this, I have cc as a base right now and I would either like to switch to live sand or add it to the cc, what is the best method? Do I need to take out everything in the tank? (crabs, fish, anenomes) or is it going to be to much a pain to do it now? Thanks for any info.

I had to do what you are thinking about doing. The key - large rubbermaid containers. Empty water form the tank into the rubbermaid containers, remove rock, inverts, corals and fish to the containers. Scoop out the CC. Put in the sand. Put water back into tank as well as LR, inverts, coral and the fish.
Be prepared for a very clody tank for several days. If you have a canister filter use it with carbon and change daily until water clears.
I can't say enough about having enough containers to put stuff in. I thought I had enough and wound up pulling out every piece of tupperware that I owned to put LR and the like in as I emptied the tank.
Also, you might get a small spike in ammonia and nitrates. You won't regret the change. I had problems with high nitrates and now the problem is solved.

I'm also going to be adding some more live sand to my already cycled tank. Keep in mind I only have a 10 gal reef tank.
Some people said if i added additional new live sand it would start a mini-cycle. I'm going to start a quarantine tank(5 gal invert) soon and im gonna add new live rock(1-3 lb) and some new live sand, wait for the cycle to end, transfer the new cycled sand from quarantine tank into my display tank to avoid a mini-cycle. This method should work for me because i don't require much because of my nano sized tank and I don't need a surplus of containers for transfering things.
You can also try asking your LFS or your friends for some established live sand.
