hEy,
iT rEElY DepEnDs ON tHe ConDItiOn of tHe LR. Is it fully cured? If the lfs has had it in tanks for at least 3weeks and you can get it home and back in water fairly quickly you can add quite a bit. You may still get a cycle but it shouldn't be bad. If you order lr on line and have a place to cure it yourself before adding it to the tank, that's another option.

In my 75 gallon I added 26 pounds of cured lr then a week 1/2 later another 26 pounds. Took me up to 103. As long as its cured you can add it in groups of 10-25. 10 is recemmended so I really pushed it.

If you are getting UNCURED rock,I wouldn't put more than 5or6lbs at a time in a 55.Even that may be pushing it...

You'll have to cure it in another container because the shipping process will kill of a lot of the good bacteria. If it smells like a salty ocean smell it is cured and good to go. If it smells like crap it is uncured and needs to be cured first.

I have the same size tank. I've got 75lbs. Started with 25lbs and decided to add 45 more after tank was esablished. Took a good three weeks to add the second round of rock. Take a look at the link below to see that 75lbs looks like.
You MUST re-cure even cured LR if you mail order. If you go with your LFS then you can add in smaller chunks and hand pick the peices yourself with out curing.
Adding any amount of LR is going to be a shock to the tank. There are several posts on the site on the procedures for curing and adding to an established tank.
Cheers!
