adding lr to cycle a tank

If you add cured lr to your tank, but it was shipped to you, then it goes through a cycling period, correct? At what point do the ammonia levels start to elevate? Is it possible for no increase in ammonia levels for 3+ weeks?
In addition, what are some good, easily readable test kits available? The one that I am using doesn't seem to have a very clear cut distinguishing color in the ammonia test especially!

I cycled my tank with LR. My ammonia started to rise after a few days. I also used "Biozyme" for a few days to kick start the cycle. Some people have used it with no result, some don't like it at all, and some do. So it's a judgment call. All I know is that my tank went thru its complete cycle in 2 weeks. Someone here said it was a textbook "hard cycle"... whatever that means!!
