Adding More Sand

I currently have approx. 1.5" of sand. I assume it is "alive", the tank has been running for at least 2 years. I want to add more sand. The problem is some of my corals have attached themselves to 1 or more rocks. The only areas that I can safely move rock and coral is on the sides. Will it be ok to add more sand to the sides and anywhere else that I can get it into? Also can I just put the new sand right over the existing bed?
Thanks Scott

I would think you could add the sand to the top of it, but I would go slow and do it over time as to not get a large ammonia spike. You could take a PVC pipe and a funnel and poor sand directly down to the bottom and put it anywhere you want it. I would make sure you rinse the sand first so that it will sink a little better for you and hopefully not get as cloudy in the tank. Over a short period of time you will have a DSB and be all set.
