adding refugium question

So I set my 75 up a month or so ago, I went with a canister filter (marineland) and a hang on skimmer. So now getting back in to the hobby I have decided to set my 150 up as well as a fish tank only and turn the 75 from fish to reef. I would like to add or switch to a refugium can I add one with out harm if I leave the canister on as well.

I'm adding a 30g custom sump/refugium to my 75g tank to replace my existing wet/dry system. Not sure about canister filters but i was told to keep my old bio balls and filter pads so i don't lose the bacteria build up and put my tank through another cycle. My guess would be but don't take my word for it is, if you keep your canister filter running until your fuge gets established and then get rid of it, you should be fine, so you won't be losing anything since your new system will already be building up bacteria.
hope that helps?

the canister is a closed loop system and the fuge is an open .
do you have lr and ls in the tank?
if so just toss the canister and build the fuge.there will be no cycle.
the lr and sand is the main filter now.
just make sure if you add lr to the fuge it is cured well.
i just put plain sand in my fuge to start since the dt has plenty of ls.
if you dont have lr and ls folloe sat and leave it for the first month with the fuge then toss it.
