Adding sand to an established tank

I want to add an inch or two of live sand to my already established tank.....my guess is to just do it slowly, a little at a time over a couple of weeks.
Thoughts?

I don't know if its right but i did it. I turned off filtration and p/h and put in my net and dropped it low as to not cover rocks and and other critters. i did not have any neg results. i would think and did think when i did it not to add the water that comes in it. i also rinsed it in a bucked of tank water one net full at a time. HTH

I have added a 20 pound bag at one time and not had any problems.
