adding sand

I used pvc pipe, Cheap and easy.
I turned off all the powerheads and slowly fed the sand through the pipe to cause as little of a mess as possible.

I use a milk carton attacjed to a pvc pipe. I turn off everything and add sand to the milk carton and push is down with a plastic spoon.

When adding dry sand to an aquarium it is always a good idea to rinse first to avoid and sand storms.

Agreed. And this is what I do. I put the PVC in the tank flushed to the sand. I add a good bit of new sand into the milk carton and push it down with my plastic spoon. Once I think I have enough in the pipe, I will slowly raise the pvc pipe and let the sand slowly slide out. I tend to let the sand pile up in a couple of places in the tank and then move the sand around with my algae scraper (it’s the algae scraper on a 36” rod). This has always kept the cloudiness down a lot and my tank would clear up again in 15 minutes or so.

I bought a bag of live sand. It already had some water in the packaging. I simply used a ladel to put it in there. It was nasty cloudy for about 10 min then it was all clear after that.

Kind of dangerous to add packaged live sand to an already established aquarium because there will be some die off and could start another cycle in your tank. At the very least you would typically get an algae bloom.

No worries. The packaged sands are just wet sand with some bacteria spores, it's not really live sand. It will have about the same effect as adding rinsed dry sand.
For new tanks I always stir it up good to get as many suspended particles as possible and to reduce the number of air pockets in the sand.
