Adding Shrimp

So we are adding some shrimp we bought from the grocery store to help start our cycle... how long should we leave this in the tank for?

You need your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate test kits, you test every couple of days and your ammonia will rise, then you will have ammonia and nitrite, then you will have all three, then just nitrite and nitrate, then just nitrate, when all you have left is nitrate, you will be ready for fish, do a water change to get your nitrate down before adding anything, it should be less than 20 ppm and preferrably less than five, after adding fish you will need to keep monitoring the ammonia and nitrite, if it raises, do small waterchanges to keep it in check till your bacteria raises to compensate more waste. add fish slowely, add a clean up crew about a week or so after your brown diatom bloom.
In other words, you probably wont have to take the small peice of shrimp out, it will most likely disappear. Also, read the sticky posts in new hobbiests section.

hopefully you bought raw shirimp :) and, don't be surprised if you never see ammonia/nitrites...sometimes, depending on the rock, it's got enough bacteria and no die off that you may not see anything.

%% i missed the part about the rock
then you will have all three
if you see nitrates you will not have any readable ammonia

ehh, cooked shrimp won't get as slushy as fast :) raw and juicy shrimp really degrades fast in the water
