Hi all, my tank is about 1 years old, however i switched from crushed coral to sand about 3 months ago, and i ahve been experiencing a large red algae bloom and its BAD its like streaming through the tank within two weeks, i do water changes biweekly but that will be weekly now, because of this algae and i had a red sea prizm, however i tossed that and now i have an AquaC witha maxi jet 1200 but i cant get a large amount of skimmate and i know that i should be esp. because of the algae blooms im getting meaning there must be organic in the water, i am getting very little amounts of skimmates, i dont know if its because the skimmer is brekaing in, keep in mind it is used and not brand new, and the cup level is at the LOWEST setting, if anyone knows how to fix it let me know

You probably wiped out a bunch of your biological filtration when you switched out your sand. Red slime has grown in place of the bacterium in your sandbed as a primary nutrient exporter.

Check your chemicals you add. See if for ingredients anything says " Something Gluconate". IIRC its basically adding sugar to the water. In addition, do you add filter feeder food? If left unabsorbed by filter feeders it can definetly cause excess nutrients in the water.
I have not heard of a "break in period" for skimmers, you just have to fiddle with them to get the setting right. Now what does this statement mean?
and the cup level is at the LOWEST setting
Whats the cup level? Maybe you need to turn that up?

most things i have read so far suggest that the cup level should be on the lowest setting if im not getting skimmate because its closest tothe water so the reaction occurs in the pipe and up into the up, and then also most of the reading suggest that there is a breakin period but i dont know if it applys to used skimmer i assume it does cuz it needs the junk to build up on teh inside to start clinging

was the mj1200 cleaned before you installed it?, make sure it was.
if the skimmer was cleaned out like it most likely was, then it needs time to break in again.
Do you see bubbles almost going into the cup when you take off the lid and look down into it?, if you do then its just a matter of time before it starts working again.
mine took a few weeks to work right
