Can someone explain to me the advantages of having lots of LR and a nice SB in your DT what benifits do you get and how does this help your tank thrive ?

I can't say there really is an advantage to having lots of LR in the DT, due to the fact a tank packed full of rock cuts down flow, detrius settles and can't be stirred into the water column to be effectively removed from the tank.....Sand is a personal preference.....If you don't want sand in the DT you could run a RDSB if space permits...

LR and sand provide more surface area for Nitrogen cycle bacteria to grow and contact the water column which aids the eradication of ammonia and nitrates from your aquarium so the more the better but like acrylic51 said if it is packed to the brink with rock you will have to really plan your water circulation system well to avoid areas of low water movement. Really porus live rock and Deep sand beds allow more anerobic bacteria (oxygen depleted) to form. Anerobic bacteria are the last process of the nitrogen cycle processing Nitates into nitrogen gas.
Having them in the display I guess comes down to personal preference and available space as you can run them in a Sump or Remote deep sand bed if you don't want them in the display tank. I prefer having rock and sand in my display tank for mostly visual reasons I like the way it looks.
There are many different ways to run your aquarium it is up to you to research each of them and decide for yourself which way will work for you.

Another advantage to having LR in the tank is a place for the critters to feel safe. Some like to swim in & out and some use it as a refuge. But I guess that depends on wht you mean by alot ?Too much can obviously hinder your swimming space
