I'm trying to get a few more answers on being prepared for an Ich or other outbreak. So: 1.I get a 20 gallon or so tank. 2.Heater 3.Water mover.Question. What type? 4.What medicine do I keep on hand? 5.How do I keep the water in livable condition if the fish are in there for weeks? Do I do water changes ? 6.How long do the fish stay in the hospital after signs of infection pass? 7.Any help is appreciated,I am pretty new at this reef hobby but I am having success at this point. I hate to admit this after reading this forum, but I have been acclimating my fish and just putting them in my DT right from the bag. I have been getting all my fish from the same lfs and they seem to take good care of their stock,I am realizing eventually the odds of doing it this way will get me, so I want to be prepared and start QT new arrivals and be ready in case of an outbreak.Although I am pretty much done with stocking fish. Maybe one more or two at most. I have a 75 gallon with 5 fish now. A black occie clown, yellow tang, bangai cardinal, blue spot jawfish and a Klauwitz Blenny. Plus a collection of mostly LPS and soft corals to this point.

For water movement, you can just use a couple of powerheads. I had a 20-long QT, and used an Eclipse hood that included lighting, the pump and a filter pad. I added a small powerhead inside the QT.
I would strongly advise getting a refractometer which measures salinity and specific gravity. You will need this in the event of an ich outbreak in order to treat using hyposalinity. I generally would not keep meds on hand, unless your local stores don't carry some basic things. This you would scout out ahead of getting fish so you will know where to get what you need. Particularly Maracyn Two for SaltwaterFish, which is an antibiotic.
You will need to maintain your QT just as you do your display tank. Routine water changes. If a fish becomes ill, it will vary as to the duration of its time in QT depending on what the problem is. A month for a healthy fish is a good amt of time for a new fish in QT.
You are on the right track. Reef keepers who do not QT usually regret it. Its impossible to treat fish in a reef tank, and also impossible to remove fish from a reef without completely disrupting the system.
