Advise to newbies from a newbie

Frist of all this site is a great place for advise, but as some of you have seem, everyone will have a different opnion about some things. One thing that sticks in my mind, was something a person from one of the specialty stores said to us.
"If it works for YOU, then stick with it"
Example would be LS or not, LR or not, types of lighting, feeding, chemicals to use ect.
Take all the advise you get, then pick something in the middle. LOL or so im learning anyhow.
Oh ... and i wish all the new tank owners Good Luck, I love this hobby, but its hard when ya first start.
Happy Fish watching.

I agree and disagree. Although something may be working for you now, in 2 years the very thing that is working for you today could be the cause of a crash.

dark angel. I agree completely.
to newbies, please excuse the bickering that goes on in here. We all enjoy this hobby so much we just want to share that great experience.
Finally: I think any newbie would be elated to set up a tank, and have complete success for two years. But then I could be wrong. So what you newbies think?

I must be missing something.... What in this hobby doesn't have the potential to cause a tank to crash.

Set your standards low and you will achieve little.

There is no reason a tank should not last way over 2 years. Take things slow, keep good maintainance with good practices and your tank will be long lived.

I couldn't agree more! I am still learning and will continue to learn for a long time but I plan on sticking with whatever works for me and when it stops working...then it will be time to try something else.

Everyone on this board has opinions, and at times things break into a a big debate. Regardless, we all love this hobby, and wish the best for our fellow marine aquarists.
If it works for you, go for it.

Wow, I'm suprised by some of the opinions here. If it works, stick with it? Do it until it stops working and then find another way?
Man, we have some downers here. Why not shoot for having a system that lasts as long as you do? Why would you wait until your tank crashes, waste all that money, and have to start over? Why not read, research, learn from other's mistakes and go for the gold. Why not do the best possible other than what just works?
If you were gonna get your car fixed, would you go to a place that fixes it $25 and then it breaks down on you in a few months, or would you spend the extra cash and have someone fix it the right way and not have to worry about it?

Yea, well I'm done... I've wasted enough of my time with this.

2 years is not a long time. Many of these saltwater fish can live for 20 or more years. I had always assumed the lifespan would be not more than 2 - 5 years. When I realized I might have these same fish 20 years from now, it changed my view of the hobby and my level of commitment to my fish (not that I treated them badly before).
As for the bickering, it really needs to stop. If someone is giving advice that is actually bad, you should be able to discredit the advice without going after the person and turning threads where people are seeking help into flame wars. People come here for help and information, not to watch other people fight.

Or at least you are happy with it.:D

hear hear.
There is more than one way of keeping a Reef tank.
Know how to seperate the cultural baggage and personal opinions from the real professional advice.
