Ive started a 90 gal FOWLR and im shopping for an affordable hang-on skimmer that will work well with my LS, LR, and mechanical filtration. From research, ive found the Typhoon Hang-on and the Turboflotor series. Does anyone think these are good choices? They seem pretty cheap, but im sure there is a good reason for that. I've also found the AquaC Remora hang-on. it is a bit more expensive, but have found good reviews on it.

I would go with the AquaC, I have a larger in sump model that has been awesome. The design on these skimmers make them very low maintence on top of being a good skimmer, all you really need to do is clean your collection cup every few days and check the spray injector every few months and you are good. They don't use venturi so you don't have to worry about the venturi clogging and they are not quite as sensitive to varying water levels in your tank. Also they don't run airbubbles through the pump so you don't have to worry about calcium build-up inside the pump.

I have owned Remoras in the past and I would not buy another one. Other people like them but I have owned 3 or 4 and never had one that was consistent. Just my opinion not flaming any ones skimmer.
I am currently using HOB skimmers from the Octopus line. For your 90 I would recommend the 300F. It is a great skimmer with so-so pumps. However, if the pump fails they are cheap to replace. If you want to spend a little more and don’t mind “modding” the skimmer look at the 800S. It is a new model and it uses a Sicce Pump. Great pump but it overpowers the skimmer body a little. There are a couple tricks that improve the performance and reliability of the 800S.
Both of these skimmers have internal pumps so nothing in your tank except the surface skimmer and exit tube. Very minimal intrusion. The 300F runs about $199 and the 800S is $239. There are cheaper models but this is what I would use for a 90 gallon.
