well...i think it is b/c i used a lot of spring water to top off my tank a week ago (i know a no no but store had to distilled) but anywaz...is this the reason for the brown algae bloom? its on the sand, sides of tank, and rock. its not that bad yet...i just wanna get rid of the algae before it gets worse...is there a way prevent it from spreading? this morning before church i stirred up the sand and no brown sand was in sight and now that i am back the algae is back on teh sand just as it was before i stirred it up....thanks for any help!

you most liekly had many little cells floating aorund, and when you added the spring water they bloomed off the nutrients, resume using RO/DI they will run out or nutrients and die down, they will never really "die" there will always be numbers of cells, but you are able to decide if they bloom or not.

Try RODI water from a reputable source. (One that changes their filters). With W/C's and top offs, your problem should in time resolve itself. On BIG tanks, filling with RODI is a hard thing to do (400-1000g) usually tap goes in (if no RODI machine is there at the time) THEN all W/C and top off is done with the "good" RODI water. Never had it gone wrong, as new tanks have algae blooms anyways about it. On smaller tanks though....NO WAY!!!
