Air bubbles coming up from live sand..what causes it?

Hey everyone, I added live rock and live sand in my tank about a week ago, the ammonia levels dropped on Sunday and now the nitrites are very high. On Sunday I also saw a diatom bloom, which now covers about half of the sand and on the acrylic of the lower 1/8 of the tank.
Today I noticed little airbubbles forming on the surace of the live sand, then expelled to the top of the tank. Any ideas as to why this happens? Also, when can I add a clean-up crew to help control this algae?
Thanks.

It's probably just nitrogen. This is what you want to happen. If your sandbed is deep enough it will probably continue and help control your nitrates.

I have this same question. I know that its normal for the bubbles to come up, but my tank has been going for over 6 months. Its still bubbling like crazy, is it supposed to just bubble for the entire life of the tank? :D
