The f-102 IS supersonic. It, as well as the f-106 replaced the f-104. It was one of the first US jets to use the area rule to make the plane faster. It was first put into use in the late 50's and was mainly a reaction to the main Russian threat at the time.

BTW I do not have a doctorial degree
Whatever he said
I enterend the air force in 1972 and we marched by a f102 delta dagger on a pedistal. But f-106 delta dart's were still flying. In the early 80's some were still being used as drones for target practice at the white sands misslie range. Just a big remote controlled airplane being shot at.
Here is some stuff: from the air force mesuem
The primary mission of the F-102 was to intercept and destroy enemy aircraft. It was the world's first supersonic all-weather jet interceptor and the USAF's first operational delta-wing aircraft. The F-102 made its initial flight on Oct. 24, 1953 and became operational with the Air Defense Command in 1956. At the peak of deployment in the late 1950's, F-102s equipped more than 25 ADC squadrons. Convair built 1,000 F-102s, 875 of which were F-102As. The USAF also bought 111 TF-102s as combat trainers with side-by-side seating.
