airstone instead of protein skimmer?

No, an airstone is not good for fish, bubbles can get into their gills. Also it does nothing to remove the harmful gunk from your water column which is what the protein skimmer does.

well do i have to have a protein skimmer? i have a 3 stage canister filter. can i just use that for my 3 stage filtration?

The canister will probably be enough, but you will want to check your parameters once you start adding live stock, and add it very slowly. If you keep only a couple fish in the tank you should be okay, but if you stock it heavily you will probably need both in my opinion.
Make sure you clean the filters in the canister filter weekly, you rinse them in the old tank water from your water change.

ok thanks. im planning on getting a huge tank in about a year. im wanting to put 2 clown fish, yellow tang, and a blue hippo tang. will this be too much untill then?

Saw your other thread. If these tangs are very small, you can house them in there for awhile but they will grow out pretty fast (assuming they survive).

+1, Tangs look very small as babies and you think they will be okay in a smaller tank, but they grow quickly and you will need to be prepared to upgrade quicker than you are financially ready or you can return them to your LFS.

What kind of nano skimmer, I have a new 29 gallon set up now with only a cleaner crew in it. I have about 50 pounds of live rock, a HOB filter, and 2 Koralia 2 PH. I think I want a skimmer, but I know I don't need much.

the fision nano skimmer. at first its hard to get adjusted but once it is you'll never have to adjust it again. just mod it with larger air line and a control valve and its good to go

Don't get those tangs until you have a good year of successful saltwater tank experience. By then you will either have a huge tank or know that its not OK to get a fish or two that could never survive outside juvenile age in a tank with the hopes and intention of purchasing a larger tank. I'm not meaning for this to sound rude but I don't know any other way to say " Tangs grow quick and never could one let alone two survive in a 30 gallon tank. I responded to your other threads on canisters with some good advice. Please don't get the tangs though.

Might I suggest a red sea prism deluxe. They are a hang on back that don't take alot of space. They do require some adjustment at first but then they rock. I have one that I don't use anymore because I have a much bigger tank now. Any question PM me.
