Are airstones a goood/bad idea in a saltwater tank?

They are usually a bad idea, small bubbles or even micro bubbles can cause problems to sensitive gills of the fish or get caught in behind the eyeball causing problems, corals don't usually like it either.
However a protein skimmer is a good idea to keep the water oxygenated.
Sometimes an airstone can be of use though, like when a power outage occurs a battery operated airstone can keep oxygen in the water.
