I have brown algae that won't stop.
Set up:
90 Gal w/ 90 lbs of Fiji live rock(built in overflow)
pro clear 150 wet/dry
protein skimmer in sump
t-5 lights(2 daylights 10,000/6,500-2 actinics ea 54 watt-5 months old)
3 1/2 in of aragonite topped off w/ 10 lbs of live sand
inhabitants:
1-firefish
1-damselfish
2-cleaner shrimp
1-fire shrimp
4-emerald crabs
15- blue leg crabs
10- scarlet crabs
10- red leg crabs
20-nassisarus snails
1- mexican turbo
1- fighting conch
Tank has been set up for six months w/parameters since the cycle pretty much staying the same
ammonia-0
nitrite-0
nitrate-0(never went above 5)
ph 8.1
alk 7 dkh(ph has remained constant)
calcium 420
sg- 1.025
temp- 79-80
phosphate-0
Salifert, Hagen test kits
I feed usually every other day, used tap water w/ a TDS reading of 155 for the 1st 5 1/2 months. I bought an ro/di unit about 6 weeeks ago, have done a number of water changes and a gallon top off a day. Before I purchased the ro/di I used a phosphate sponge which didn't change a thing. If I leave the day lights on for just 8 or 9 hrs(actinics always about 12 hrs) two days in a row there is brown stuff all over the sand(some areas having hair attached to the sand) I have to turn the daylights off or cut back to about 4 or 5 hrs a day just to keep the algae at a minimum. If I turn the day lights off for 2 or 3 days most of it will go away. There is a little green algae mixed in occasionally but mainly brown. I had hair algae within the 1st month and that went away as did the bubble algae within the 1st 2 months. Everything has been the same for pretty much the whole 6 months. The tank parameters have really not changed and the only things I've lost were 2 Mexican turbos(cooler water snails).
A couple reefers of over 15 years at the lfs say they have always used Baltimore City tap with no issues, on their tanks and in the store, and hardly ever have had algae blooms (they both have MH). One guy said he's heard of a lot of algae w/t-5's. Oh, I have about 16x's the turnover. The ro unit hasn't seemed to help at all as of yet and I have probably done about 4 or 5 15% water changes with it the last 6 weeks.
On a side note, I hardly see any critters on the sand at night(the past couple of months) like I did when I added the live sand. Why would they be depleting? Should I add more? Does anyone have any ideas why this algae is so persistent?

you might try changing out your bulbs... as bulbs get older the red spectrum is more previlent and that makes the "bad" bacteria and algea thrive...

the RO water should help, but at a rate of 15 % changes it might take a while. there isn't any sunlight entering the tank is there? like stated above, bad lighting can cause these blooms.

I thought t-5 bulbs lasted longer than Mh's or Pc's. Nothing has really changed in the tank and these bulbs were new 5 months ago. I hope there not bad already, because I really don't even have average use.

the average life of a bulb is 6 mos... they will taper off easily or drastically depending on the type of light... IMO bulbs should be changed out every 4 mos to ensure the quality... some will/may last longer but it doesnt mean you are getting the best light...

I guess I wouldn't think it were the lights, maybe if the brown algae just started recently but its been constant even when they were brand new and from what I've read t-5's can last up to a 1 1/2 years. I hope the reef geeks didn't slip some used ones. Could there be any other suggestions if not the lights.

try shortening the time you lights run....i start my actinics at 2pm - 9:30pm. daylights 4-6:30. ran this way for 5 mths and no effect to fish or corals.....algea has dissapeared

Actually I have been getting a rise in brown algae. I figured it had more to do with me getting my calcium levels up to normal. Was 200 and now about 380. I am in the process of looking for new lights since I will be putting my halides in soon. I want everything to be new. I upgraded my cleanup crew and man that Mex turbo is mowing down some brown algae off the back glass. I'm getting another one today!!

I have very fine aragonite sand, the ro unit is new as of 6 weeks ago. Typhoon III. TDS is always at 0. The skimmer came with the wet/dry and works ok. I am thinking about upgrading it soon. My bioload is light and the skimmer is pulling about a cup every 4 or 5 days of dark stuff.

I would beef up the cleanup crew. You could easily add anther 20 nassarius and a turbo for every ten to five gallons. You don't really have any true herbivores in the tank. Consider a dwarf angel or with that tank size you may be able to get away with two dwarfs if added at the same time and species of widely different color patterns. Maybe a Flame and a Pygmy or Flame back. The pygmy or flame back will be smaller than the Flame but more aggressive so it may even out the aggression perfectly. I would also add a yellow tang to that tank. It should make quick work of any fledgling hair algae.
Other than that it sounds like your doing everything else you possibly can and at six months I would say your tank is just around the corner from the new tank algae phase to run its course and disappear for good.
Good luck and have fun.

I will be adding a cinnamon clown next week that I am quaranteening at the present and eventually a flame and a yellow tang maybe a purple instead, just going a little slower because of the algae. The Mexicans are great grazers but since I had 2 die within a month of each other I have been hesitant to add more. Hopefully your right and the algae will subside soon enough.
