Algae eat nitrates???

Algae will consume your nitrates.
What you might want to do is get a refugium going with macro algae in it like spaghetti (chaetomorpha) algae in it, which you can trim to help keep your nitrates down.
Having brown algae (diatoms) could be a result of having silicates in your water. What kind of water do you use? Tap, RO, RO/DI?

Well, one thing to do is switch to RO/DI water if you can or at least RO water (from a lfs or grocery store). That should help.
Another thing you could do is add a fluidized bed filter (like the phosban 150) with Rowaphos in it, which will absorb phosphate, silicates and arsenic.
