Algae, Good or bad

I'm new into this and have a new tank with 1 yellow tang, 3 damsels and 3 crabs. I'm seeing purple algae on rocks. Is this good or bad? Also, there is a little light-green on another rock. Is this good or bad? If possible, would like a little run-down on good and bad algae so that I'll know what to look for. Everything else is OK!

Try Archives and FAQ. I know someone posted an algae slide show at some point not too long ago. Maybe do a search on this site. Sounds good to me though.

That purple stuff is coraline alga.that is ok for your tank.it grows on live rock and on your aquarium walls.It is a calcium based alge

Coraline Algae is good and the green may not be a bad thing either. Keep an eye on the green algae and make sure it isn't hair algae that is a pain in the rear.
