Algae Harmful?

Is that hair algae harmful? It looks kinda nice, like green flowing plant stuff, (I know, probably not aquatacally correct)! Oh well, ask me if I care, but I will if its not good for ecosystem. Thanks all.

A little bit of hair algae can be nice, but it is like being a little bit pregnant. Eventually, hair algae will simply overtake all surfaces in the tank, clogging pumps and making the tank look a mess. Manage your dissolved nutrients and phosphates better and it won't be a problem.

Do you care?
In any case, as stated, manage its growth and youll be fine. If you have corals, consider keeping it comstantly in check.

LOL...I love the look of bubble algae, and purposely introduced it into my 56g tank. I also seen a fellow who really loved the look of hair algae, he said it looked like a really cool swamp to him.
It's your fish tank, so whatever is pleasing to you is all that matters. Hair algae is very fast growing, and it covers EVERYTHING!
As for the answer to your question... it is, as all macro algae are...good for phosphate and nitrate removal. Macros will keep your tank water pristine, as you remove the overgrowth, you remove the PO4 and NO2. The macro absorbs them to be able to grow, and thus removes it from the water.

Did plan on eventually getting to corals. Better figure out how to get this stuff under control. Thanks so much for you help.

Thanks Flower! So I'll just trim em back a bit. Theres only one area that looks a bit out of control, and I am having trouble keeeping it out of the slits for the filter. But the other little patches just look like long thick pretty grass, Going to be getting some shrimp and crabs. That will probably curb that! Thanks again m dear!

You will find that trimming greens in the water will eventually turn your water yellow. I forget what the yellow is, but as I recall it doesn't play well with hard corals.
This is the reason the original algae turf scrubbers who had no way to clean the screens outside the tank ended up failing and giving scrubbers a somewhat bad name initially.

Gelbstof is the word you are looking for. It's caused by the release of tannins in the water column by decomposing green algae. It doesn't do well with hard corals because it significantly decreases the amount of light they receive.
Yeah, they didn't figure out to clean their screens in the sink - which I find kinda stupid now. In any case, gelbstof can be avoided with the use of a good amount of carbon - and perhaps a small water change.

If you like the green-grassy look of LHA, consider putting some green star polyps in the tank once the LHA problem is resolved. It will look like a nice grass-covered field, gently waving in the breeze/current.

Gsp is everyone's favorite coral that comes over. They always ask about that one. Sitting right next to a rock full of hornets and another full of fire and ice. I actually recall that gsp is the stuff that made me fall in love with the hobby in the first place.

I meant to ask you how your feeling, but I don't think I did it right, anyhow, that was to you. Our tanks will keep us sane with all life throws at us!

Wendy...if you really like the grass look. This is maiden hair, it isn't invasive like hair algae.

It can still be invasive. That is why it's usually kept in a refugium and not a main display tank. It will still overgrow more sessile, slower growing organisms.
