Algae in horse tank

What creatures can I add in with my horses to help clear algae. It is growing on the sand and some on the glass that I usually clean. I thought of adding a few shrimp but they don't take care of that. If I do what type is horse safe? hmm... I have a couple misc. snails in there but there not even getting the job done! I don't like hermits did away with them from both tanks. Could we add a starfish maybe? What is suggested of inverts to add for help?

How long has your tank been set up. And what does the algae look like..color, thickness, long and stringy or flat...

It's flat and it is gold in color! I know some is diatomes "sp". Tank is only a couple months old. I was the one who set it up quicker then it should have been for the horses sake and the keeping at the LFS. There is also some green growing but it is on the glass only. All is flat though nothing growing in stalks or anything! Lights are the issue as well but I try to run the white in the day the blue a few hours in the evening and then sometimes the moonlights overnight or until bedtime for us.
