ALGAE SCRUBBERS

Algae scrubbers are used mostly by big aquariums. They work by occasionally harvesting some of the algae, and that "exports" nutrients, as well as pollutants from the tank. There is a company that advertises in FAMA that sells this type of filter, but they must hold some kind of patent on it, as they don't tell you exactly what they are selling. You can download an acrobat reader file with tons of info on it, but that is only trying to sell their stuff. It's very expensive. They advertise that they are out to change the aquarium industry... I think it would be interesting to try one to see if it would work, but I know live rock and sand works. I think it is really not very practical for the home aquarium keeper. I've seen pictures of them, and they look very dirty, and messy. What I have wondered, if your water is perfect for coralline algae, it's usually not great for green algae, and vice-versa. What would cause the algae to grow in a tray, and not in the tank?
