My tank tends to get green algea and some brown/purple all over glass and LR after several weeks... This normal and if so how can I stop it? (FOWLR 55 gallon)

Check for phosphates. Also, what kind of water are you using? what kind of lights, and how old are they?
Somthing is making it grow.
Tap Water is bad. Us RO/DI water if you can.
Old lights will change specturm (sp) and make hair algea grow. Also, lights not made for a tank will make it explode.
Dont overfeed too.

need to clairfy, your tank will not "explode" the growth of the hair algea will.......

have had the tank up for 5 years, but I have been away at college... Use all distilled water and the lights are regular ones you would get at walmart... (hood).... I bought some lights online to go in their but they are very purple and dark, doesn't look real natural......
