Almost lost my horses

I almost lost them to an ammonia spike. I have had them in my 20 gal while redoing the 54 gal. A few days ago, they were acting really funny, and I had to move them quickly I tested ammonia and it was above 1.0. I contacted a breeder friend and quickly got them into a clean water with meth blue. They have come around, and are now in a 5 gal bucket. I have been trying to get the 20 gal clean, but cant get the ammonia below .50. I have completely changed the water at least twice. There isnt anything in there except a few fake plants and a couple of small zoo frags. I think my problem may be my water storage container. I just tested the water in there and it was between .25 and zero. I have no clue what is going on.

Wow - that's really scary. It's bad enough having an ammonia problem when you KNOW what's causing it but to be battling it when you don't know where it's coming from is frustrating.
Good luck with this and keep us posted.

Hi Teresa..... where is your source water from? straight tap? RO? RO/DI? Store bought? MANY water authorities in communities throughout the US add chloramine. This can/will give an elevated ammonia reading with freshwater test kits. Also, even if this water is run through a REGULAR RO/DI unit, which will break the chloramine down into ammonia and chlorine, the RO/DI unit will remove the chlorine component via the carbon blocks but the ammonia component will not be removed.....resulting in a bucket of ammonia water.
I had this exact problem, unfortunately. I now have a bohemeth of an RO/DI unit (dual RO, 2 carbon blocks, 2 sediment filters, 2 DI cartridges) to ensure my water is safe.

I have a well, into my ro/di filter. I have to pick up a fresh water ammonia kit this week to test the fresh water.
